Five small changes that make life easier for a senior cat

Cats are good at hiding pain. A cat of ten or more who stops jumping on the sofa, skips the litter tray or sleeps more may be dealing with stiff joints rather than “just getting old”. Mention it to your vet, who can check for arthritis and other conditions, and make the home easier in the meantime.

Five changes

  1. Add steps. A low, stable step or ramp to the favourite bed or window turns a big jump into two small ones.
  2. Use a low-sided litter tray. A tray with a low front lets them step in without a high lift. Keep it on every level of the house.
  3. Warm, soft sleeping places. Place a bed near a radiator or in a sunny spot, with a thick, washable layer.
  4. Raise or lower bowls. Some cats prefer a shallow, slightly raised dish. Keep water in more than one place.
  5. Short, gentle play. Two to three minutes with a slow wand toy, at floor level, keeps muscles active without strain.

When to see the vet

Increased thirst, weight loss, reluctance to jump, litter tray accidents, or hiding more are all reasons for a check. Senior cats benefit from a health check every six months.
