Shedding season: a 10-minute grooming routine that cuts the fur on your clothes

Most indoor cats shed all year because the heating tricks their coat into thinking it is always spring. You will see peaks in spring and autumn. The aim is short, frequent grooming that cats accept, rather than a rare long session they hate.

The 10-minute routine

  1. Pick a calm moment. After a meal or a play session is ideal.
  2. Start with the cheeks and chin. These are scent areas cats enjoy having touched. Use a soft brush or a glove.
  3. Work down the back with the lie of the fur. Light strokes. Stop at the belly and base of the tail unless your cat clearly likes it.
  4. Finish before they flinch. Two minutes is a win in week one. Reward with a treat or a play session.

Which brush

  • Short coats: a rubber brush or a grooming glove.
  • Long coats: a wide-toothed comb first, then a slicker brush. Use gentle pressure and check for knots behind the ears and under the legs.

Hairballs and diet

More grooming means fewer hairballs. Cat grass in a pot gives some cats something to chew. If your cat has bald patches, scabs or excessive grooming, see your vet.
