Which cat do you have? The five play styles, and what each one needs
9 October 2026 · 1 min read

Cats do not all play the same way. A toy that excites one cat leaves another cold. We group cats into five play styles to help choose what goes in the box. Most cats are a mix, but one usually leads.
Hunter
Stalks, pounces and shakes things. Needs chase-and-pounce play, a satisfying catch at the end, and a place to ambush from, like behind a box or under a blanket.
Lounger
A professional napper who plays in short bursts. Needs warm perches, soft textures and gentle, low-effort play they can do from a lying position.
Zoomie
Zero to sixty with no warning. Needs big-energy outlets such as a tunnel, a long wand session and play on a schedule so the sprints happen before bedtime.
Diva
Picky, opinionated and easily bored. Needs variety, texture, and puzzles that make them feel clever. Rotate toys often and watch what they ignore.
Scaredy-cat
Hides at new noises and visitors. Needs safe hiding places, slow introductions, predictable routines and quiet, short play sessions that build confidence.
